Swedish Industrial Innovation: Chemicals, Cleantech & Deep Tech

Updated Read 3 minEN · SV · +19

A small chemistry company between the resin producers and the converters, set against three Swedish names it is often listed beside but does not compete with.

Nexam Chemical is a small Swedish company selling chemistry into an industry dominated by very large ones. That is a familiar shape in Sweden, and the comparisons in this hub are here to make it concrete rather than flattering.

The comparisons

  • Nexam vs Perstorp. A specialty chemicals group, owned by PETRONAS since 2022, selling building blocks to formulators rather than masterbatch to converters.
  • Nexam vs Polykemi. A family-owned compounder in Ystad, and the clearest example of the customer this technology has to convince.
  • Nexam vs Trelleborg. A components group of a completely different scale, on the buying side of the same materials question.

What the three have in common

None of them competes with Nexam Chemical on product. Two of them are potential customers and one sells into a different link of the chain entirely. For a company often described as a Swedish polymer company alongside these names, the accurate statement is that it occupies a narrow position between the resin producers and the converters, and that position is small, specialised and, if the chemistry is defensible, hard to displace.

What would change the picture

Three things, in order of how much they would matter:

  • Disclosure of the chemistry and the patents behind it, which would settle whether the position is defensible or merely unoccupied.
  • Independent trial data, which no supplier in this market publishes.
  • A large chemicals group launching a competing reactive additive for mechanically recycled polyolefins. Nothing on Perstorp's site suggests it today.

Where the numbers are

The quarterly figures, ownership, insider transactions and analyst notes are in the data room, each with the document it came from. The argument they support, or fail to, is on the thesis page.
