Recycled polyethylene and polypropylene lose melt strength before they lose anything a tensile test would catch. That single failure mode is behind bubble instability in film, sagging parisons in blow moulding and thin corners in thermoforming, and it is the reason a material that passes a specification sheet can still be unusable on a line. The numbers that frame it

The EU generated 79.7 million tonnes of packaging waste in 2023, of which 15.8 million tonnes was plastic. Overall packaging recycling was 67.5%, against a 70% target for 2030. Plastic packaging was at neither: the target is 55%, and in 2023 only Belgium and Latvia had passed it, while several member states were under 30%.

From 2030, Regulation (EU) 2025/40 requires 35% recycled content in plastic packaging that is not contact-sensitive, and 65% from 2040, averaged per plant and per year. Supply is uneven, demand becomes compulsory, and quality is the variable in between. That is the space additive suppliers sell into.
