Speculative Insight: Connecting the Dots on Nexam’s Unnamed Composites Customer

One unresolved Nexam story is potentially approaching an interesting deadline.

On 16 October 2024, Nexam announced that an unnamed global structural composites customer had entered full-scale production after 1.5 to 2 years of development. Management said the customer had the potential to become one of Nexam’s largest within two years.

That takes us to October 2026.

So what could this project be?

Our speculative view is that the clues point toward PET structural foam, potentially with significant exposure to wind energy.

The first clue is Dane Momcilovic.

Dane is not a known link to 3A Composites or any other candidate. The clue is his background. He was previously CTO at Nexam, later Group R&D Manager at Diab, a major structural core producer and established Nexam PET foam customer, before returning to Nexam in 2022 specifically to grow its PET foam business.

It was Dane who commented on the unnamed structural composites customer in 2024.

The timing adds another clue.

The stated development period suggests the project started around late 2022 or early 2023. In May 2023, Nexam announced new patented chemistry for PET foam and structural core materials, explicitly mentioning wind turbine blades. Nexam expected commercial sales from the technology within roughly a year.

Put together, the timeline looks interesting:

2022: Dane returns to grow PET foam.

2023: The unnamed customer project is likely under development. Nexam patents new PET foam chemistry.

2024: The customer reaches full-scale production and serial deliveries.

2026: The original two-year commercial target comes due.

There is no confirmation that these events represent the same project. But the overlap in people, technology, application and timing makes the connection worth considering.

If the thesis is correct, the customer could be one of the large global structural core producers.

3A Composites is a plausible candidate. Its AIREX PET foam serves wind, automotive and aerospace, closely matching the applications Nexam referenced.

Gurit is another possibility through its global PET structural foam business and large wind exposure.

Diab fits technically, but its long-standing relationship with Nexam is already public, making the confidentiality around the 2024 customer somewhat harder to explain.

None can currently be confirmed.

There is also a possible explanation for why this customer has not yet become an obvious major revenue contributor.

Wind remained challenging through much of 2024 and 2025. It is therefore possible that Nexam successfully completed qualification and entered serial production, while the customer’s underlying volumes developed more slowly than originally expected.

If that interpretation is correct, the interesting part is what happens when volumes return.

The chemistry is potentially already qualified.

More customer production → more structural PET foam → more Nexam additive.

And if the formulation expands across additional grades, lines or factories, the opportunity could become considerably larger.

This may explain why Nexam believed the customer could eventually become one of its largest.

Now comes the interesting coincidence.

Nexam announced the project on 16 October 2024.

Nexam reports Q3 on 16 October 2026.

Exactly two years later.

We would not expect Nexam to reveal the customer simply because two years have passed. But Q3 becomes a natural checkpoint for the original statement.

The signals to watch are PET foam volumes, structural composites growth, improving Lightweight demand, larger recurring orders and expansion of existing customer applications.

Our thesis remains speculative.

But the clues form a coherent chain:

Dane → PET foam expertise → new PET chemistry → multi-year customer development → full-scale production → weak wind market → potential volume recovery.

If that chain is correct, an old 2024 announcement could become increasingly relevant again.

And if this happens while Reactive Recycling is also scaling, Nexam could have two independent growth engines entering a more meaningful commercial phase.

The customer is unknown. The PET foam connection is our hypothesis. But Nexam’s two-year timeline is real, and it is about to expire.
