Nexam vs. Trelleborg

Updated Read 3 minEN · SV · +19

Both Swedish, both called polymer companies, and that is the entire overlap. What Trelleborg actually does, and why it sits on the buying side.

This comparison exists because both companies are Swedish and both are described as polymer companies. On the evidence, that is all they share, and saying so plainly is more useful than manufacturing an overlap.

Where they do not compete

Trelleborg makes components: seals, hoses, fenders, coated fabrics, antivibration mounts, medical components. It is organised in three business areas, industrial solutions, medical solutions and sealing solutions, and its materials base is largely rubber and elastomer rather than thermoplastic. It buys polymer raw material and sells engineered parts.

Its own list of competitors, on its own site, names component manufacturers: Contitech, Freudenberg, Hamilton, Hutchinson, Parker Hannifin, Roxtec, Saint Gobain and SKF. No additive or compound supplier appears in it, which is the clearest available evidence that the two businesses do not meet in the market.

The relationship that does exist

Trelleborg is a customer archetype, one step further from the additive than a compounder is. Its sustainability framework includes a circularity target to increase the proportion of recycled or bio-based raw materials in its products, and its strategy page states that share is increasing.

A manufacturer with a recycled content goal and a demanding application is exactly where the performance problem shows up. It is also where an additive supplier's argument is hardest to make directly, because the specification belongs to the part, not to the polymer, and the chain between them runs through a compounder.

The scale difference

Trelleborg reports sales of 34,329 MSEK and 17,237 employees, in just over 40 countries with more than 100 manufacturing sites. Nexam Chemical reported 60.0 MSEK of net sales for the second quarter of 2026. The comparison is roughly five hundred to one on annual revenue, which is worth stating because the two are sometimes grouped as Swedish polymer companies in the same sentence.

Trelleborg has also spent recent years divesting: it names automotive, tires, and oil and gas as sectors it has left, while acquiring in aerospace and water infrastructure. It is concentrating on engineered components in demanding environments, which moves it further from commodity plastics, not closer.

What to watch

Nothing, in the competitive sense. What is worth watching is the demand signal: when large manufacturers with recycled content targets start specifying recycled material in load-bearing or sealing applications, the performance requirement that additive chemistry addresses moves from packaging into durable goods. That would widen the market Nexam sells into, with Trelleborg on the buying side of it.
